Odyssey of Native Americans

Location:

Upper Arlington

Event Type(s): Education, Senior
Organization: City of Upper Arlington - Senior Center
Description: A Trail of Endless Tears: The Odyssey of Native Americans with Richard Bloom

The story of America has not only been stained with the stigmata of slavery, but also the travesty of manifest destiny and the lives it cost. Millions of Native Americans stood in the way of the white man’s march to sea from shining sea, but only until firepower, overwhelming numbers, disease and imprisonment cleared the way. Join us as we return to the beginnings and follow, in a three-part journey, the tearful odyssey of Native Americans who, inexplicably in the 21st century, remain clustered in concentration camps we call reservations - rife with poverty, alcoholism, and crime. Part 1 (Winter) presents a historical overview from the 1600s to now; Part 2 (Spring) presents critical Native American leaders and events that shaped their spirit and culture; and Part 3 (Summer) explores such across the-board issues as government policy, assimilation and geopolitical spheres and how all affected their destiny.
